A sustainable approach from farm to fork

SUSTAINABLE AND DECARBONIZED AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES, WHILST MAINTAINING CROP YIELDS

Our cooperative members are trialing production methods with reduced environmental impact:  agroecology, crop rotation, low carbon. Our teams of agronomists offer them new solutions: managed nitrogen fertilization, mechanical and robotic tools, self-diagnostics and carbon footprint analysis.

These practices have been assessed as part of the CRISTAL VISION Smart Sugar Beet benchmarking system and 100% of our beet crops were certified SAI Gold or Silver in 2023!

DECARBONIZED SITES THAT CONSUME LESS AND LESS WATER AND ENERGY

For many years now, Cristal Union has had an ambitious approach to lowering its energy consumption and decarbonizing its operations.

By 2030, Cristal Union will further reduce its CO₂ emissions by 23% compared to 2019. This agricultural and industrial strategy has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global benchmark. We also aim to achieve water self-sufficiency at all our sites by 2030.

By 2050, the goal is to make all of the Group’s sugar refineries self-sufficient in energy, using part of the beet pulp as fuel.

INCREASINGLY SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

Cristal Union is continuing to decarbonize its upstream supply chain, with geographical tracking of beet silos, soil removal and experimenting with 48-tonne trucks for fewer rotations.

For downstream transport, the target is -7% GHG emissions between 2023 and 2026!  This trajectory is validated by the Fret 21 initiative.

This ambitious sustainability approach, from farm to fork, allows Cristal Union to provide its 2,500 industrial customers and distributors around the world with products that meet the most demanding requirements!
